Happy To Be Back!

Wow! It has been a long time since I was last here! We had a wonderful time on Friday attending the Georgia Home Education Association Conference. We got to hear Ken Ham, of The Creation Museum, speak. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great to get to look through curriculum, talk to vendors, and buy a few new goodies! I am excited to go through everything and plan out next year's schedule.

On Saturday we moved my oldest son back home from college. Boy, his stuff multiplied while he was there this year. He was in an apartment style dorm this year, so he had a little more personal space. I think we need to work on better organization before move in time in August. I am glad to have him home for the summer. Love having everyone under one roof!

Well, I hope everyone is enjoying Mother's Day! We enjoyed a wonderful church service, then a nice meal with my parents. We headed over to my mil's house to visit her, then headed home for some relaxation. I am planning on reading, reading, and more reading!!!

On our recent July 4th road trip, we went to The Outer Banks, North Carolina. We had an absolute blast! The weather was great and the waves were awesome!

The sand dunes along the way were just beautiful.

We stopped for some fun in the water at Nags Head Beach. As the day wore on, the beach became very crowded. But, hey, it was July 4th!!

We had a great time and saw some beautiful scenery. We would love to go back and stay a little longer!

Happy Wednesday! I am showing part II of our July 4th family road trip. Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. Be sure to check out all the participants beautiful pictures! In case you didn't see part I of this post, our family took a whirlwind road trip through many places in the great state of North Carolina. What a trip!! The next few pictures are from a wildlife refuge that we stopped at. It was early morning and everything was so calm. It was extremely peaceful! This was not too far east of Rocky Mount.

I just thought this was a really creative way to let everyone know the locations of the churches in town. This was in the town of Canton, NC.

We also went to Mount Airy, NC. Below is a replica of Floyd's Barber Shop.

I believe this is Pilot Mountain. What an unusual formation! We saw it from the interstate and it was interesting.

Next week, I will post more pictures from our whirlwind road trip. It was an absolutely wonderful trip. The boys had a blast and we all enjoyed the time together experiencing God's beautiful creation.

Outdoor Wednesday

Good Wednesday morning! I am linking up to Susan's weekly Outdoor Wednesday. Be sure to visit her over at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com to see all of the beautiful outdoor pictures! Our family decided to take a road trip for the July 4th weekend. We had an absolute blast! We traveled quite a ways and saw some beautiful scenery. We were also able to experience a few places that we had not been before. I hope to share pictures of these places over the next few Outdoor Wednesday posts.

Today, I will show some pictures from a rest stop in North Carolina. This rest stop had some amazing landscaping which was set off by the gorgeous mountains. What a refreshing stop! I loved this little bridge area. It was a great area to stretch your legs.

Outdoor Wednesday

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday! Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. We recently went on a field trip to the IMAX in Chattanooga. While we were there we walked around the Tennessee Aquarium to enjoy the view of the river. This first picture;however, is from my backyard. I just love seeing this every year. It is in a section at the back of our yard that needs some work. To see it's beauty among the work that needs to be done is just amazing!

Okay, on to Chattanooga! After we left the IMAX we ate lunch at Rembrandt's, which is in the art district. I couldn't help but get tickled at this little one trying so hard to take that big piece of bread! Rembrandt's is a great little place to stop in for a snack or a meal. Since the weather was so nice, we decided to sit outside and eat. It was very relaxing!

This is a wading pool at the end of some steps beside the aquarium. Behind this pool, is the river. This area recently underwent renovations to commemorate the history of the Cherokee people that were in this area.

This plaque tells of a Cherokee game called stickball. The history of this game was very interesting. The game would be similar to baseball, but played over a much larger area. The game also could result in injury or even death.

The Tennessee River.

This is a lovely area to enjoy the outdoors. There were people eating lunch, reading, and just plain enjoying the day.

These are the steps that lead to the wading pool. Along the wall are some of the Cherokee symbols. During the summer there are always children playing in the water along the steps. It is a great place to rest a moment if you are visiting places downtown.

We had a great day in Chattanooga. We saw the IMAX Hubble 3D movie. It was a very interesting movie.

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday! Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. Today, I would like to show some pictures from our recent field trip. We visited The Tunnel Hill Heritage Center in Tunnel Hill, Georgia to see the historic Western and Atlantic Railroad tunnel. This railroad was extremely important during the Civil War. There is a house on the property, The Clisby Austin house, where General Sherman took up residence on his march to the sea. While we were there, we visited the museum and found some very interesting displays about the area. Tunnel Hill is right outside of Dalton, Georgia. Dalton is known as "The Carpet Capital of the World".

This display about Key's Battery tells how they struggled to live through the elements and fight on.

There are displays of various Singer machines that were used in manufacturing bedspreads and other chenille products, which led to Dalton's designation as the carpet capital.

There were also displays of bedspreads that used to be on the roadside of Highway 41, which came to be known as "Peacock Alley".

This covered bridge leads to the railroad tunnel.

The Clisby Austin House- Right now the house is a private residence;however, it will soon be turned over to the historical society and available for touring.

This railroad was built to connect the Port of Augusta to the Tennessee River Valley. The construction began in 1848 and was dug through the base of Chetoogeta Mountain. The first Western and Atlantic train passed through the tunnel on May 9, 1850. The tunnel was the site of several historical events during the Civil War.

Due to larger train cars getting stuck in the tunnel, a new tunnel was built parallel to this tunnel, thus ending the use of this tunnel in 1928. The tunnel was facing possible destruction from seventy years of neglect, until in 1992 measures were taken to preserve it.

We enjoyed our field trip here and hope to come back in September for the battle reenactment.

Welcome to another Outdoor Wednesday! Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting this weekly event. Today, I would like to show some pictures of our recent trip to Point Park on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. We are doing an in-depth study of the Civil War and this was a wonderful spot to visit. This is a view which overlooks Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The name of the battle that took place on Lookout Mountain is The Battle Above The Clouds.

This sign read something to the effect of "Be careful of the edge." We thought this was funny because of where it is placed and how close you would have to be to read it very well. Also, we starting wondering who had the wonderful job of placing the sign where it is????

We had a wonderful visit to Point Park. After exploring the park, we went inside a gift shop across from the park which had some really interesting Civil War items. Also, before we went into Point Park, we ate at a little lunch place called Guthrie's, which was delicious!

WHITE ENCHILADAS
About 10 flour tortillas
2 cups shredded Jack cheese
2 cups cooked chicken
1/2 onion, diced
3 Tbs. butter
3 Tbs. flour
1 can chicken broth
1 cup sour cream
1 can diced green chilies (7 oz.)

Mix together 1 cup of the cheese, the chicken and the onion. Put some of this mixture into each tortilla, roll and place seam side down in a 9x13 casserole dish.

In a skillet, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for a minute. Add the chicken broth, whisking till smooth. Cook this over medium heat unto it thickens and bubbles. Stir in the sour cream and green chilies. Pour over the top of the enchiladas. Top with the remaining cheese and bake at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes. ( www.eatathomecooks.com )

Our family loves these enchiladas and they are easy to make. I usually cook and shred a big batch of chicken up so that I can make some other dishes to freeze for later.

Outdoor Wednesday

It is a great time ( except for the extreme pollen count! ) to be outdoors. Everything is looking great and the weather has been wonderful. This is our hosta ,which lines the walkway to our front door. I love when it comes in!

This burst of color at the front of our house just thrills my soul! I absolutely love this time of year and looking out at all the color by the front door.

This is an area in our backyard. I hope to be able to work on it some this weekend. We have a bench for reading and such. I want to make this a nice place to sit and relax. I really neglected this area last year, so I did to do some extra maintenance now. There is also another area on the other side of the back that needs some attention. Hopefully, I will be able to start in on these areas this weekend.

*CROCKED BARBECUED BEEF
2 lbs. chuck roast, boneless and trimmed of all visible fat
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/8 cup honey
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder

In a Crock-Pot, place chuck roast. Salt and pepper it to your personal taste.
In a large bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients until well blended. Pour on top of the roast, cover, and cook on low for 8-10 hours.
Remove roast from Crock-Pot and shred meat with a fork. Return meat to Crock-Pot, stirring well to coat evenly with the sauce. Cook for another hour and serve.

Healthy Life Friday

I am on a journey to become a healthier me. Not just for me, but also for my family. We do fairly well on some levels with having a healthy lifestyle, but there is room for change and I really think that change needs to happen now! So, on Fridays, I will be blogging about my journey in this area and I will be posting recipes, tips, and anything else that might help to encourage others to live a healthy life. First, I want to be all that God has made me to be. I feel that when I am not living as healthy as I can that I am not able to do all that the Lord has out there for me to do. Also, I really believe that "mom" sets a tone in the home for how healthy or unhealthy a lifestyle her family will follow. So, today I am going to set some short range and long range goals and write down some ways to achieve those goals. As we have all heard, writing down those goals is so very important to actually achieving them. Also, by blogging about this journey, I will be more accountable to see it through. So, come along with me and let's make some changes!

Long Range Goals:
Lose 35 pounds
Firm up sagging muscles :)
Be physically active
Be mentally active
Be spiritually active

Short Range Goals:
Weigh in every Friday with weight loss and measurement changes
Develop an aerobic and anaerobic exercise plan
Choose some physical activities to get involved in
Set aside some reading time everyday
Dig deeper in my morning bible study/ prayer time

I am excited about this, as change is really needed. I just want to feel better and have more energy to enjoy my family. I also don't want my boys to fall into a sedentary lifestyle. I want all of us to be participants in life, not just spectators!

I want to share this recipe today. We will be having this on the menu for the upcoming week:
MEXICAN LASAGNA
1/2 lb. ground turkey
1/2 envelope taco seasoning mix
1 can enchilada sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
3/4 cup salsa
1 can black beans, drained
9 ounces lasagna noodles
2 cups low-fat cottage cheese
3 cups low-fat Cheddar cheese, shredded

In a skillet, brown turkey; drain and blot grease. Add taco seasoning and, using half the recommended water on seasoning packet, simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside. In the meantime, preheat oven to 375 degrees F. in a medium bowl, combine enchilada sauce, tomatoes ( and their juice), and salsa. Mix well and add black beans. To make lasagna: in the bottom of a 13 X 9-inch pan, spoon a third of the tomato sauce mixture and spread evenly. Top with uncooked lasagna noodles till sauce is covered. Then add all the meat, spreading evenly, add 1 cup of the cottage cheese and 1 cup of the Cheddar. Spoon half the remaining sauce on top. Add another layer of noodles, remaining cottage cheese and 1 cup of the Cheddar. Add another layer noodles, remaining tomato sauce, and remaining 1 cup Cheddar cheese. Tent with foil ( so the cheese doesn't stick to it) and tightly cover. Bake for 45 minutes or until noodles are tender. Let stand 5 minutes before digging in. ( Saving Dinner, Leanne Ely )

Serve with a big green salad and fruit

Calories per serving: 547
Fat: 13 g

We will have this for lunch on the weekend, since it does have a bit more calories.

Family Happenings

We thoroughly enjoyed our Spring break vacation to Orlando. We used our Give a Day, Get a Day tickets to go to EPCOT, which is probably our favorite Disney park. Beautiful weather, family all together, what more could we ask for?? Just gotta love the mouse! I do like all the kitchen stuff. This is from one of the shops at Downtown Disney.

We had a great time at the house that we rented. All of us enjoyed the game room!

Loved relaxing and having fun in the pool at the house. I had a great time reading out there!

Love my super-wonderful husband! He makes me laugh and enjoy life!

I wanted to continue this week with pictures from our recent trip to EPCOT. We went during the garden & flower festival and had a wonderful time. There was much to see and enjoy. If you had the time, there were workshops available to take part in. Maybe one day....

I love the water fountains! Water is just so relaxing and enjoyable!

The flower gardens were absolutely stunning!

Brings back memories!

Once again, the water fountains and waterfalls are very relaxing to be around. You can just feel yourself unwind from a busy day while enjoying the beauty of water features such as this one.

Outdoor Wednesday

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday! A big thanks to Susan, over a www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. It is so fun to see everyone's pictures! Our family took a trip to Orlando recently . We participated in Disney's Give a Day, Get a Day promotion. Our favorite park is Epcot, so that was the park we chose to visit. We enjoy the rides in Epcot, but we also really enjoy going around the World Showcase. This time of year, Epcot is host to an annual Flower and Garden Festival. They have lots of lovely flowers to admire and they also put on workshops that you can participate in. Today, I have some pictures of the flowers at Epcot. For the next couple of weeks I hope to show the wonderful flowers that Epcot presented.

This was actually outside one of the resorts. One day, my husband, oldest son, and myself rode the monorail and explored the various Disney resorts. We did this one Christmas and it was alot of fun!

They had a section of gardens displayed at Epcot.

I just love this one! It really brings out the Disney in all of us! Next Wednesday, I will show more of the beautiful flowers that were on display. Have a wonderful day and enjoy God's creation!

The Cheesecake Factory

Things have really been busy lately. Hopefully we will get a nice relaxing break soon, as we get ready for our spring break. A couple of weeks ago we went to The Cheesecake Factory in Atlanta and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The food was absolutely awesome! As you can see, we had enough for lunch and some left over to take home.

This chocolate cheesecake was wonderful!

The cheesecake made with Splenda was just as good!

This was a raspberry cheesecake. I didn't taste it, but I would assume from the look on his face, it was great!

It was so nice to have such a great treat. My oldest son wants to go back on his birthday. One of our traditions is that the birthday person can pick a special place to go eat. This really works out well for everyone:) So, it looks like another trip to The Cheesecake Factory in the near future!

Outdoor Wednesday

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday. Thanks to Susan, over at http://asoutherndayddreamer.blogspot.com/ for hosting this weekly event. We are having such a wonderful winter season here in the South. Yesterday, on the second day of March, we saw another snow!! The forecast had been for maybe a few flurries, but wow, it came down all day. It was an absolutely beautiful snow! My boys have their co-op classes on Tuesday, so we had to be out on the roads. The good thing about this snow was that the roads were too warm to be dangerous during the day. We watched beautiful snowflakes come down all day as we traveled to co-op and back. The beauty of God's creation!

Everything started in the early morning hours....

and kept going in the afternoon hours...

and continued into the early evening hours....

and finally stopped in the late evening hours! We have enjoyed the many snows that we have experienced this winter. Most winters we get nothing in the snow category, but this winter is making up for that.

The Challenge is Complete!!

During the month of February I have been participating in an organizing challenge. Thank you to Organizing Junkie for putting this together. First, I will show my "after" and "before" pictures. I know that should be "before" and "after", but I didn't load the pictures correctly. Oh well, the show must go on! The challenge also has the participants answering five questions about the process which I will answer at the end of this post. I have to say, this was a great challenge! I had been putting off organizing this room until the whole thing was just out of control and the room was not being used for its intended purpose. I feel soooo much better now! The room I chose to organize is our school room/ craft room. A few months ago, this room flooded and we had to remove carpeting and take everything out. Well, what happened after that was that everything just got thrown back in, with no order or organization. So, all of our school materials have been carried all over the house as we use them and that in itself is exhausting. So, to say the least, I am super excited about the new, improved room! 1. The hardest part of the challenge for me was to actually follow through and complete it. I was able to overcome this, because of the accountability to the other participants! (Thanks everyone!)

2. In order for the room to maintain its new order, I am putting everything back in its place at the end of the day. Also, this room is for school materials and craft items--nothing else ( sports equipment, cleaning supplies, etc...) I want to enjoy this room, not dread going in there. I love the room now and want to be in there!!

3. The "stuff" that I purged from the room was mainly thrown away. It was either torn up, didn't work properly and could not be fixed, or the parts were missing. A few items are being donated ( some movies ) and some other items are being sent back to their rightful owners :)

4. A few storage solutions that I employed was to move my desk. It was up against a wall, so I moved it out a little. This helps out alot because our dry erase board is right behind the desk. It just flows much more smoothly. I also took out a cabinet that really did not do much in the way of storing items and I moved a bookcase to an opposing wall which opened up wall space for my maps.

5. Why do I think I should win this challenge? This is really a hard question because I know everyone worked hard on their spaces and overcame obstacles in the process. I already feel like I have won, whether or not I actually win the challenge, because I followed through on this and now I have a space that I love. Also, I proved to myself that I could do this on a shoestring budget. I took items that I already had, but was not using, to help out in this room. Also, now I have the confidence to tackle some other much neglected areas in my home. I am so ready to make this house a comfy, cozy, organized home.

We went on a hike this past weekend at Cloudland Canyon, one of Georgia's State Parks. The weather was beautiful! Hiking down to the waterfalls, we saw some amazing scenery. There were remnants of snow, but lots of ice! The trail was a little difficult at times because of the ice. But, when we got to the bottom, it was worth it! The waterfalls were just absolutely gorgeous! I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Mondays Musings, Challenge Update

Lately, we have had some fun playing board games. Most recently we have been enjoying Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit. I absolutely love board games. I think they bring the family together to talk and share memories. Also, the games we play on the WII are fun. These are also great to get us physically active as a family!I don't know what is happening here in the South, but we sure are enjoying it!! Once again on Friday, we got the white stuff!! The snow has been so beautiful!! The boys had some good friends over to spend the night. I watched the Olympics. It was a great evening!

Sunday we went to Atlanta to go to church with my oldest son. We went out to eat afterwards using a certificate that I bought at Restaurant.com. I bought a $25.00 certificate. They normally sell for $10.00, but they were 80% off, so it was only $2.00!!! I just gave it to the server before we ordered and everything went great. Our family of 5 ( all adult eaters!!! ) ate, now this is including the 18% gratuity, for $27.00. Not too bad! I will definitely use these when we choose to eat out.

Our weekend and week's beginning was great. Good friends, lovely snow, worship and eating with my son===Wonderful!!

UPDATE ON CHALLENGE: The challenge I posted about, going on at Organizing Junkie, is going well. I did get the room cleaned and have been taking out what no longer belongs in there. This week I plan to put the items that will go in the room in their proper place, buy some files for my desk and get those organized, put a rug in the room, and finish organizing the bookshelves in the room. We are getting close to the finish date, so I better put high priority on this! I really want to have it all finished by the end date. I will say that in participating in this challenge, I am now pumped to tackle those other "undone" projects. This has helped me to put a plan in place and move forward, which I think has been the hardest part for me. Onward with organizing!!!

Organizing Challenge

This is the first update on my endeavors in the February challenge going on over at http://www.orgjunkie.com/ . I have been able to go through quite a bit of stuff from the room. I have thrown things out that needed to go and I have sorted some papers that need filing. The room is starting to shape up to the point that I can now go in and clean the floors and walls.

My plan this week is to mop the floors, wipe down the walls, clean the windows, and clean the bookshelves. Our basement area flooded recently and we took out the carpet in this room. We painted the floor and I hope to put an area rug down. We have got to dig up around the perimeter of the house and put in a drain, so until that is done I will not be putting more carpet down. A rug might work better anyway because we use this room for school and I hope to make a craft area.

I also plan to put up my curtains and arrange any furniture that will be staying. I will plan to go through the bookshelves to see what stays and what goes. I REALLY need to de-clutter this area. It is hard for me to be productive in this room when it has so much clutter in it. I see this as my biggest challenge this week. I have a hard time knowing what to send on its way and what to keep. I may have to call my husband in on this. He is wonderful at tossing what needs to go. The only thing is, I might not can watch when he does it:)

I have found so much inspiration in reading everyone's plans for the areas they are organizing. This is such a great way to accomplish a task that has been looming for a while. It will be awesome to see all the "after" pictures!

Grocery Savings

Grocery savings are in the air!! I had a great trip to our local Bi-Lo today. They are having a great week of sales. When you team the sales up with some coupons, you are in for some wonderful savings. I didn't take a picture of everything that I bought, but the total for everything before taxes or coupons was $237.51. I paid, before taxes and after coupons, $92.65. I was very happy with that!! The above picture is of the items that I got totally free!! The Wet Ones were actually a money maker. They were on the BOGO and I had $1.50 coupon on each one.

After Bi-Lo, I ran into Wal-Mart for a few items. The Post-It Notes, pictured above, were bought at Wal-Mart. They were a money maker also. They were 50 cents and I had $1.00 coupons for them. At Wal-Mart, I was able to find some Zip-Lock containers that were on clearance and I also had coupons for them.

It was a good grocery day. I am glad, because I need to buy a new dryer as mine gave out last week. It is so cold and rainy, it is hard to hang dry alot of items, so I have been going to the laundromat to dry clothes. It hasn't been too bad, but the industrial dryers are a little rough on some of our clothes.

We are gearing up for our movie and pizza night. It's a good night for it, because the weather is cold and rainy. We might get a few snow flurries tonight. We have the hot chocolate going as I type. Woo-hoo!!

We are also gearing up for the Super Bowl. I just love watching it. I am going to try a new salsa recipe for the special event. A few years ago we camped at Disney World during the time of the Super Bowl and it was so much fun. Alot of the campers decorated their campsites for the team they were cheering for. We enjoyed that!

1 box Betty Crocker fudge brownie mix
Water
Vegetable oil
Eggs

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom and sides of 13x9 inch pan with foil. Grease foil on bottom only of pan with shortening or cooking spray. Make brownie mix as directed on box, using water, oil and eggs. Bake as directed for 13x9 inch pan. Cool for about 1 hour

Using foil to lift, remove brownie from pan; remove foil. With deep 2 1/2 inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut 14 brownies. Place brownie hearts on a cooling rack or waxed paper.

In microwavable bowl, microwave frosting uncovered on High 10 to 30 seconds. Stir; frosting will be thick and spoonable. DO NOT BOIL. Carefully spoon melted frosting over brownies to glaze, allowing excess to drip down sides. Sprinkle with candy sprinkles before frosting sets.
Prep Time: 30 min. Total Time: 2 hours 25 min. Makes: 14 brownie hearts

SPECIAL TOUCH: Mix 1/4 cup Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting and enough red food color to make pink frosting in a microwavable bowl. Microwave on High 10 seconds. Drizzle over chocolate-glazed hearts.

I got this recipe from a Betty Crocker calendar. These would make a wonderful special Valentine treat for your sweeties!!

February Organizing Challenge

Welcome to the 28 day organizing challenge, hosted by Organizing Junkie over at www.orgjunkie.com . I am going to be organizing our schoolroom. My oldest son is a freshman in college this year and my other two sons are in 10th and 9th grades. This past summer our schoolroom became the "junk room". Everything got thrown in there, to be put away at a later date. Well, that date never came and, especially after Christmas, the room just looks like a tornado went through it. So, this challenge was very timely. The boys now do most of their work in their rooms, but I feel that we still need our schoolroom to hold all of our supplies, books, and such. Also, I like having a place to keep our maps and timelines up. Right now, I feel that I am carrying our school supplies all over the house, which at times is exhausting. I am embarrassed to show these pictures, but to make progress, I have got to be accountable in this area. Hopefully, you will come back to see the "after" pictures at the end of February. So, here it goes...(please no uncontrollable gasping at the horror you are about to see!!)

Some of the items in the green box are things that I had to move a few months ago when our downstairs flooded. I know, excuses do not count:) If you notice, the window needs love and care. Our cat, who passed away a couple of months ago, would climb up there and rest. In doing so, he tore up the old blinds. I did come across some great curtains that I plan on putting up.

Okay, I have to say that I was trying to move the table when it collapsed. I am not sure why I just left it that way. Also trying to figure out what possessed me to take a picture of it that way.

Well, I feel better that all that is out in the open. I feel like I can go and conquer this!! I believe my biggest challenge will be to stay on track with completing this project. I hate to admit it, but I have not always been the best in completing household projects. That is why I thought this challenge would be good for me and for my family. Hopefully, they will see how good it feels to complete a rather daunting task!!

I will post my after pictures at the end of February, but I will be updating the progress of this project every Monday. I feel that if I don't, my accountability goes out the window with the project.

Snow Day!!

"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness, come before his presence with singing. " Psalm 100:1,2 KJV"" " Wow, we have had another great snow! These are few and far between here in North Georgia! On Friday around noon the snow started coming down and coming down hard. We had a blast. As you can see, we had to be creative in the department of sleds. Our pool float served double duty as a snow sled and it did a pretty fine job.

Of course, no snow day is complete without the snow angel!

This was taken on Saturday. Tonight is supposed to be in the teens, so the weather stations are calling for ice on the roads in the morning. As for right now, though, we are snug in the house, fixing to enjoy chili and a movie! I love snuggling under a quilt watching a movie with my family!

Recent Events

Last weekend we had a birthday celebration for all the December, January, and February birthdays on my side of the family. We have decided this year to meet every three months to celebrate everyone's birthdays. We started with December because my niece and nephew have December birthdays. We had so much fun visiting. This is my sister-in-law, one of our January birthday people. We had a great time chatting about recipes and couponing. This is my dad, mom, and younger sister. It was great to get to visit with my sister. She lives in Knoxville, not too far away, but we just don't get to visit as often as I would like. She is enjoying motherhood with a 10 month old little boy. Sweet as pie!

About two or three weeks ago, we had a dusting of the white stuff. This was the second time this winter! That doesn't happen alot down here in Georgia. We have enjoyed getting even just a dusting:)

The boys and I watched a documentary today about The Donner Party. What a tragedy for those people. I didn't remember studying this in school, so the story was just amazing to me. It is amazing what some of the westward expansion emigrants went through.

We are enjoying our American History study. We are going into depth, so it may be a study that goes into the summer months. We are watching several documentaries, as well as reading several books. Netflix has been a wonderful resource in this area!

Well, I am off to research dryers. Ours finally dried its last this morning!

What's been going on?

It has been so long since I have posted an entry to my blog. I have missed it, but I just couldn't decide which direction I wanted this blog to take. I started this blog to journal our family's daily activities. I want to keep it that way. I absolutely love everything about being a wife and mother. Now, that is not to say that everyday is just super smooth, but I love being a keeper of my home and of my family. I love our homeschooling lifestyle. We are learning so much together and having a great time along the way. So, I feel re-energized to just go blogging crazy!! Today was a cold day here in Georgia. We have been feeling a little tired lately, so we took school at our own pace today. We snuggled in quilts to read and discuss history. We are using Sonlight to study American History. We love to read, so this curriculum suits us well. After reading, it seemed like a great time to pop popcorn and enjoy some hot chocolate. We have been on this fad lately about putting flavored creamer in our hot chocolate. We had never done this until a couple of months ago. Boy, have we been missing out! Now I see why all my fellow couponers were so glad to see the Coffeemate coupons.

Last night was my son's Civil Air Patrol banquet. It was a nice event with some great food. It was potluck, which I love. I enjoyed getting to learn some more about CAP.

My son enjoyed getting to visit with friends, and I enjoyed getting to visit with friends also!!

The cadets looked very professional in their uniforms. They also conducted themselves in a very professional way. Very refreshing....

I am off now to read.

Eat From The Pantry Challenge, CVS Savings

I apologize for the very fuzzy picture, but I want to show my CVS savings from this week. I was able to get Listerine Mouthwash, 2 boxes of Imodium, 2 bottles of nail polish, lip gloss, 2 compartments of eye shadow, and makeup foundation, all for $14.96 out of pocket. It should have been even less, as I noticed later that one of the nail polish bottles didn't ring up as discounted. Lesson learned, keep better track of it while checking out, but even so, it was a really good savings. This would have cost $62.05 without discounts and coupons! The make-up was 75% off and I had coupons for the Imodium. Also, if you bought 2 specific SC Johnson products you got the Listerine free ( $4.99 value ).

I also wanted to post my menu for this week of the pantry challenge. This is turning out to be a really great challenge. It challenges me to organize my pantry and freezer, but also to get a little creative with some meals.

Monday- Breakfast night- Scrambled eggs, bacon, chocolate chip muffins, juice, tea

Tuesday- My mother-in-law called and wanted to take us out to eat!!!

Wednesday- Vegetable beef soup in the crock-pot topped with shredded cheese, tea, water

Thursday- Spaghetti, garlic bread, green salad, tea, water

Friday- Homemade pizza, chips & salsa, tea, coke

Saturday- Chili in the crock-pot, crackers, tea, water

I will give my weekly grocery tally on Saturday. So far, this week has been good in the fact that most of the menu I was able to make from pantry/freezer items. I will be checking the sales to see what is at rock bottom prices and stocking up on those items, as well as getting some eggs and milk.

Eat From The Pantry Challenge

Today I am linking up with www.moneysavingmom.com and www.LifeasMom.com for the Eat From The Pantry Challenge. Since I am cleaning and organizing today, I thought this would be great! For the month of January I will be planning our menus mainly from our cupboards and freezer. What I really like about this challenge, is that it is not about NOT spending any money at the grocery store in January, but about seeing how you can save this month by cutting back at the store and making creative meals from the pantry.

Okay, my goals for this challenge are:

1. To spend no more than $75.00 per week on groceries- I have three teenage boys that eat alot!! Now, my oldest will be back at college next week, so he will be eating off of his meal plan. But, my other two and my husband can go through alot. This will be a real challenge, but I think we can do it!!

2. If a really good sale happens on something we use, I will stock up on that item. I am really trying to build my stockpile, so if something is at rock bottom price, I will get as much of that item as possible.

3. I will get my pantry better organized. I will also come up with a system for keeping track of what is in my freezer.

4. The last three Sundays of the month we will be going out to eat after church. This will come out of our "eating out budget", not our usual grocery budget.

I am looking forward to seeing how others are coming up with meals to meet the challenge. I will post our menu for this week tomorrow after I have worked on our pantry and freezer today.

Menu Monday, 365 Project

These are from my 365 project, day three, which of course was yesterday. I did not have a chance to post them yesterday. We enjoyed a wonderful day of worship with a great group of Christians! After morning service, we headed out to do a little shopping. My oldest son mainly received money for Christmas this year, so he was ready to check out some clothes shopping. We first headed to Old Navy. He found some jeans and shorts there. Next we headed to the mall, which was very crowded! He did find a few things at American Eagle. It was nice to just look around and see what clearance finds were out there.

He was able to pick up some new clothes, which was nice. It was really cold out yesterday, so I was glad to get back in the warmth and comfort of home.

It was great to be able to spend this time with him, as he goes back to college next week. It has been wonderful to have everyone home, enjoying movies and board games together. This Christmas season has been a fantastic one, mainly because we were all able to enjoy it together and because we had some great times with extended family.

Today, I hope to get alot of cleaning and organizing accomplished. I need to run to CVS and pick up a couple of items. I have a $5.00 off $25.00 coupon that expires today, so I want to make good use of that! They are having a cosmetics sale that I would like to take advantage of.

Tomorrow we "formally" start back to school. Learning, in my opinion, never "stops". But, our regular school routine will begin again! I feel we are all refreshed and ready to go.

Bringing in The New Year

One of our family's big goals this year is to be better stewards of the money that God has entrusted to us. Recently, I have been couponing and I have to say, IT WORKS!!! Now, I am not couponing like I use to in the past, with one or two coupons here and there, but I researched some great sites on the web and couponing has now gone to the next level. It takes a little time to get in the groove to use coupons to one's best advantage, but I think I am getting closer on that end. This is making all shopping so much more fun. I finally feel like I am winning in not only the grocery game, but the clothes shopping, gift shopping, etc. It takes some work, but I feel that is my job as the main shopper of the house--to be on the winning side of this game! Food Lion had a sale on chicken and cereal, so I headed out with coupons in hand to take advantage of a few sales. Also, as part of my 365 project, I added photos of my shopping journey:)

This is not a great picture of my receipt, but I ended up with about 50% savings today. I had a total savings of $42.56. My total out of pocket with tax was $44.99. I had a $1.00 coupon on Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate Mix and Food Lion had it on sale for $1.00 a box!! Also, they had their store brand hot chocolate mix on sale for .89 cents and I had a coupon for $2.00 off of 2 boxes, so I actually had overage on this!! I had to pick up some dog and cat food that I didn't have coupons on, so the freebie and the overages helped on that end.

I really hope to get that percentage of savings up. I am learning to shop with a different mindset, to stockpile and make my menus from my pantry. It is overwhelming at times, but it is also alot of fun to see how much I can save!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year! I am so excited about ushering in a new year and a new decade! This year I want to participant in the 365 project. I hope to have the link for the project up by tomorrow, but basically it is about capturing life's daily moments in pictures. I did a little of this last year, but I really want to try and capture the everyday moments more this year. Some people do themes with this. I am not sure yet if I will keep to one particular theme or just record the daily happenings of our life as a family. I will include these pictures in my posts here on this blog. In starting this year of the 365 project, I wanted to reflect on some milestones of 2009.
We took vacations with both sides of our family in 2009. I absolutely loved this time that we had with both families. The above picture was our December vacation with my side of the family. This is "the cousins". Wonderful memories!

My oldest son started college in 2009. Wow, what a range of emotions that was!!

I had great times with great friends in 2009. This is our Jane Austen book club.

This is our summer vacation with my husband's side of the family. What a great time we had at the beach.

My oldest son turned 18 and my middle son turned 16 in 2009. Milestones:)

My younger sister had her first baby in March of 2009. A beautiful baby boy!

My middle son and my youngest son worked for our state senator in 2009. What a wonderful experience.

We closed out 2009 celebrating with friends from church. We had a great time eating, playing games, and just visiting!

Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! What a wonderful Christmas we have been having at our house. I was reflecting on how this has been a hard year economically for our family, as it has been for most families, but how this has been a wonderful Christmas. We have enjoyed family time together with extended family. We spent last weekend in Gatlinburg with extended family. We were hoping for snow so badly, as we get very little in our area! Well, on the way there, the snow started coming down! And I mean it really started coming down!! It was beautiful. As we got closer to our cabin though, the roads were not so wonderful. We had some trouble getting up the hill to our secluded spot in the woods, but we finally made it. My older brother, who was supposed to meet us later that night had to end up staying in Pigeon Forge for the night. He was able to get to the cabin on Saturday. It was so much fun! The cousins played in the snow on Saturday and had a blast. The cabin had a theater room, which was awesome, so we watched movies and played Disney Scene-It. There was also a game room with a pool table and an arcade game that was loads of fun. It was a great way to start our Christmas vacation!

This is Ober Gatlinburg. We wanted to check out the snow tubing and the ski slopes. It was opening weekend for skiing and it was packed with people!

Outdoor Wednesday

Thanks to Susan at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting Outdoor Wednesday. I love reading all the participants posts! Last Saturday, my middle son participated in Wreaths Across America. This is conducted nationwide by the Civil Air Patrol. In the fall, the cadets sell wreaths to be placed on the graves of those who served our country in military service. The cadets started early, 7:00 a.m. on a chilly 25 degrees southern Saturday morning. They worked on placing the wreaths until the official ceremony began at 12:00. The ceremony lasted until around 1:30 p.m. Yes, those cadets were out in the cold from 7:00- 1:30 to honor those who served our country.

Below is my cadet. He absolutely loves CAP.

The ceremony was moving. All branches of the United States Armed Forces were represented. The ceremony reminded each of us not to take our freedoms lightly. Freedom is not freely given, it is hard fought for and must be valued as such.

Service Project & First Snow of The Season

We participated in a service project this morning with members of our Honor Society. This project was connected with Prison Ministries. The group got the name of a child of an inmate. They went this morning and bought Christmas presents, then wrapped the presents and finished up with a Christmas party. It was great seeing them pick out presents for this child. The Christmas party was so much fun! They wrapped the presents, ate some pizza and other goodies, then enjoyed a really fun Christmas game.

They even let us moms get in on the game. We divided up into three teams, boys, girls, and moms. It was a Christmas trivia type of game and I have to say, some of the questions were quite hard. The boys ended up winning, with the girls coming in at a close second. Sadly, the moms ended up in last place. We will be ready for them next year though:)

A very exciting thing happened this morning here in the South. We had our first snow of the season!!! Well, most of you who regularly get snow would probably laugh at this snow, but down here we will take what we can get. We were so excited this morning to look out and see a white lawn. I'm glad we got out in it early, because by afternoon, there was no trace of snow left. Now, we are anxiously awaiting the next snow event!!

I'm off to watch some great college games today!! Enjoy a super Saturday!!

This is at Red Top Mountain near Atlanta, Georgia. Notice the tree in the lake. We really enjoy this Georgia State Park for its beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and picnic areas. They also have a lodge with a nice restaurant. This park suffered some flooding a little while back when the Atlanta area had all that massive rain in a short time period. Some of the picnic tables were under water for some time.

I just love this old bridge. This is at the Chattanooga and Chickamauga National Battlefield Park in Chickamauga, Georgia.

Another view of the bridge. When you look at it, I think you can't help but think back to the Civil War. This park now gets quite a bit of use from joggers, walkers, cyclist, and families enjoying a day out. It is a beautiful park with loads of history.

Happy Monday! What a marvelous weekend we enjoyed. Our family had our movie night Friday night, with Star Trek being the movie of the night. I have to say I enjoyed it. I didn't watch alot of Star Trek growing up, but my husband certainly did. On Saturday my hubby and my boys worked at their grandmother's house blowing leaves and cleaning the yard up. I stayed at home to clean house and get grocery list and menus together for the upcoming week. We ended Saturday night watching our favorite football games.

Yesterday, we enjoyed a wonderful day of worship with our oldest son in Atlanta. After a great meal at The Olive Garden, we headed home to prepare for the upcoming week and to rest!! My middle son and myself are headed out this morning to volunteer at Life Care Center. We will be packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Later today I hope to continue on with that housecleaning!! We are taking this week off from school to prepare for Thanksgiving. My oldest son will be home for a few days and I want to thoroughly enjoy that time with him. This week we will also be putting up our Christmas lights and decorations. So much fun!! We always do this the day after Thanksgiving. I just love this week!!

Giving Back

A couple of weeks ago, our chapter of The National Homeschool Honor Society, participated in a service project. The local LifeCare Center was having a carnival to raise money for Operation Christmas Shoebox. We were to help set up for the carnival, then help to run some of the booths. We had a great turn out! There was much to be done before the carnival and the students jumped right in and did their jobs. As you can see from the picture below, Chic-fil-A was there and working hard!This was the "morning crew", ready to begin work.

It was a great day of volunteer work. These students helped out and had a great time also. It reminded me that I need to always be instilling in my boys that giving back spirit by giving back myself. Sometime it is easy to get caught up in "everyday life" and forget that we are to give back to our communities, our churches, and our country. So, this weekend we are making a list of ways that we want to give back this Christmas season. We have come up with two that we are very excited about. We are collecting items for our local animal shelter and we are collecting food for our local Ronald McDonald House. Last year, we volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and enjoyed it thoroughly! We cleaned the house so the residents didn't have to that day. What a great work the Ronald McDonald House performs! We hope to be able to do that again.

Outdoor Wednesday

Thanks to Susan, over at www.asoutherndaydreamer, for hosting this weekly event. Be sure to check out all the participants in Outdoor Wednesday. We recently took a field trip to Cloudland Canyon State Park. This is one of Georgia's beautiful state parks. I have shared pictures from here before, but the day we went was absolutely one of the most gorgeous days we have had!

We have received so much rain lately that the waterfalls were wonderful. We have been there when there was just a trickle, so this was nice to see.

This is at the bottom of one of the waterfalls. There are hiking trails down to both waterfalls. These trails have stairs that make it a little easier to get down to the bottom.

I just love seeing the waterfalls and being reminded of the majesty of our Creator!

The leaves were putting on a spectacular show for us!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Cloudland Canyon State Park. The ranger took us on our hike. He was able to share lots of great information about the park.

Week in Review and Upcoming Activities

This past week my sister, sister-in-law, and niece took my Mother out to eat for her birthday. We went to a wonderful tea room that was decorated for the holidays. It was the first night of their holiday open house. I loved this snowman decorated tree! This wreath was just beautiful. We were able to have the Mother's Room, which is basically a private room. It was great for our birthday celebration!

This picture is a little fuzzy. This was the tree that was in our room. I wish I had gotten a better picture of the top of the tree. It was stunning!

This is my niece holding my sister's baby boy. This niece is my brother's daughter and she is a sweetheart!

This is Mom holding my nephew. My older brother's wife is in the red sweater. The room we were in was decorated so lovely. I just wanted to decorate my house the minute I got home!

It was a great evening with the "girls" and our sweet little "boy" guest. We hope to make it an annual tradition. The decorations were amazing and the food was wonderful. Another great plus, which was a wonderful surprise, was our server. The daughter of one of my friends was our server. She is the sweetest, most beautiful girl. She did a super job and I was grateful she was our server.

This coming week, along with our schoolwork, I hope to get alot of deep cleaning done in preparation for Thanksgiving. I think this year I would like to get our outside Christmas decorations up in time for Thanksgiving day. I love Christmas, but I like to wait to put my inside decorations up the day after Thanksgiving. So much to do!

I would like to post a couple of Gooseberry Patch recipes today. I just love their recipes!

Spooky spiderweb Cupcakes

18-1/4 oz. pkg. chocolate or spice cake mix

1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

16-oz. container vanilla or orange frosting

Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Bake in 18 to 24 paper-lined muffin cups. Cool and set aside. Place chocolate chips in a small plastic zipping bag; microwave on high setting for 30 seconds to one minute, until melted. Snip off one corner of bag; squeeze chocolate onto a wax paper-lined baking sheet to form 3 concentric circles. Immediately draw a toothpick through circles to form a spiderweb design. Repeat with remaining chocolate; chill until set. Frost cupcakes; press webs gently into frosting. Makes 18 to 24 cupcakes.

Maple-Spice Pecan Pie

2 9-inch pie crusts

3 eggs

3/4 c. brown sugar, packed

1 c. maple syrup

3 T. butter, melted

1 T. lemon juice

1 t. vanilla extract

3/4 t. nutmeg

1/4 t. salt

1-1/2 c. chopped pecans

Place each pie crust in a pie plate; set aside. In a large bowl, whisk eggs and brown sugar. Add remaining ingredients except pecans; whisk to blend. Add pecans and pour into pie crusts. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Lower to 350 degrees and bake an additional 35 minutes , until golden. Makes 2 pies.

Happy Birthday Chase

Happy Birthday Chase! My youngest turned 15 yesterday. We went to visit my oldest son at college. We went to church, then out to eat at Olive Garden ( you can't beat that all you can eat soup, salad, and breadsticks with 3 teenage boys!!). I cannot believe my baby is 15. I love being a wife and mother! God has entrusted these boys to my husband and myself and we pray for wisdom and guidance in raising them to God's glory. Each child is so different, which makes parenting very "on the edge" enjoyable! I have so enjoyed each of my boy's differences, learning their interests, likes and dislikes, and trying to learn just what makes each of them tick! It is never dull or boring, I can say that. We have extremely wonderful days and sometimes extremely difficult days. I don't see how anyone could parent without God. Raising your children will definitely bring you to your knees in prayer. I am looking forward to experiencing what God has in store for us with our boys! But, for this birthday boy, I want to say WE LOVE YOU!!! Okay, this is the cake that my middle son, who is 16, made for Chase. Note the abundance of chocolate chips! Gotta love that creativity:)

Couponing

I have recently gotten into couponing extreme! I spent quite some time learning how to get organized and how to properly use coupons. I think this has been where my problem was in the past. I had no organization at all with my coupons, so I would quit using them after a short time. Well, now I am hooked! It is exciting to see the savings and to see my stash building up. I thought I would show today my first CVS shopping trip couponing style:)

I went through their ad and circled the best deals. I then took out all the coupons I had for those deals. I headed to the local CVS and had a great time! I thought it went well for my first time. I hope to get better at this, so that I can keep my family stocked and be able to help others by donating.

Today, I stocked up on toothpaste! They had Colgate toothpaste for buy one/get one and I had three 75 cent coupons. Also, I was able to get quite a bit of gum. They had it for $1.00 (regularly $1.49) and I had coupons for buy one/ get one free. I was also able to get a free hair styling product!! I spent $29.79 (with tax) and ended up saving $34.14 between store sales and coupons. All in all I thought this was a good trip.

Field Trips

Yesterday we went to the Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta, Georgia to see Macbeth. I love this place! The actors just make Shakespeare come alive. They are awesome. They give school matinees, which is nice to curb the cost. Also, during the matinees, you can bring lunches in to eat during intermission. This was well worth the drive. I hope to be able to take the boys to another play in the spring. "A Christmas Carol" will be performed this December. I would love to see that one. I would imagine that they would put on an outstanding performance!

We have been able to have some really great field trips this school year. The information that we receive at these places is wonderful. I appreciate how everyone at the places we have visited put so much passion into what they are doing.

We are enjoying the days of autumn here. The weather has been absolutely amazing this week. Watching the leaves change is always a fun event. We are near a state park that is having hayrides all through October. We hope to be able to take part in one of those. I would imagine that you could see some awesome leaves during this hayride!

This month has been full of birthdays in our family. My dad celebrated his birthday earlier in the month, and just this week we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday. My youngest son will be celebrating his 15th birthday this weekend. What a wonderful month!

Outdoor Wednesday

It's Outdoor Wednesday time again! Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting this weekly event. I just love this time of year in the North Georgia mountains. The leaves put on a spectacular show for everyone to take in. The first of October we take our annual trip to Dawsonville, Georgia to pick out some great looking pumpkins at Burt's Pumpkin Farm. After choosing just the right pumpkin, we head over to Amicalola Falls State Park. This park is stunning! Also, if you are in the Georgia Canyon Climber's club, this park has one of the trails that you are supposed to finish. It is a tough trek to the top of the falls, but so well worth it.

What an awesome autumn day this has been! The weather is wonderful and inviting. Today, I would like to share a recipe from Gooseberry Patch. This should go right along with the season!

Pumpkin-Apple Butter

15-oz. can pumpkin

1 cup applesauce

3/4 cup apple juice

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 t. pumpkin pie spice

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat; simmer for 1-1/2 hours. Chill, keep refrigerated. Makes 2 pints.

Back From a Break/ Memorial to Tiger

I am back to blogging from taking a short break. There has been so much going on that I felt a little "overwhelmed". I feel refreshed to be a blogging maniac again! I want to dedicate this post today to our family cat, Tiger, who passed away on Saturday, October 17th. Tiger was actually my oldest son's cat. We rescued Tiger from the animal shelter about 3 years ago. He was 11 years old when we got him, so he was in his "older" years. Our family absolutely loved this cat. He really didn't want you to pick him up, but he really loved being in the same room that we all were in. He would watch movies with us, sit in on our school, and curl up on the bed with us for our night time reading. We knew he was not feeling well, as he was not eating much and he actually let me hold him for extended periods last week. He will be missed by our family. Below are some pictures of our sweet Tiger.

Outdoor Wednesday

It's Outdoor Wednesday time again!! Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting this wonderful event. Be sure to check out all the Outdoor Wednesday posts. Today, I want to share pictures of a day trip we took to Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden, Alabama. We went to see the Ink and Blood exhibit at the cultural center, then headed on over to the park to eat lunch. Let me tell you, this park is absolutely beautiful! I want to go back and spend the day just at this park.

The park is home to a gorgeous 90 foot cascading waterfall. There are hiking trails, a pioneer village, petting zoo, train rides, campground, and chapel. The park was bursting with activity when we went. The leaves were just hinting at changing. The day was truly wonderful.

Legend has it that the park was originally known as Black Creek Falls. It was renamed by an Indian chief in honor of his daughter, Noccalula. Noccalula was being forced to marry a warrior from another tribe. She begged her father to let her marry her true love, a warrior from her tribe, but he refused. On the day of her proposed wedding, Noccalula went to the falls and took her life by jumping to her death. Her father was grieving for his beloved daughter and so renamed the park in honor of her.

The chapel sits next to the falls and is stunning. There was a beautiful bride there getting her pictures made.

The next few pictures are of the park. This is a gorgeous time of year to visit this amazing area. Take a picnic and a camera and you are set!

Family Activities

This past weekend we attended Family Weekend at our son's college. We had a great time getting to explore the college. The student center houses a bowling alley which has eight lanes. We haven't been bowling in some time, so we headed on over to the student center to bowl a game. It was great timing, as we got there in time for the 99 cents games! We had alot of fun. Just spending time together and doing an activity that we haven't done in a while was nice.

We then headed upstairs to the food court. Most of the places to eat were closed at this time, but we were able to grab a bite. After that we headed outside to hear the marching band give a concert. What a great evening!

Outdoor Wednesday

Thanks to Susan over at www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting Outdoor Wednesday. Be sure to check out all the posts! This week I want to post pictures of our weekend at Georgia Tech. The college hosted Family Weekend, which was an absolute blast! It was a great time to spend with our son and a wonderful time to get to know the college even better. On Friday there were lectures and presentations that you could attend. We ended up just getting checked in and then spending some fun time as a family. We went bowling on campus, then ate in the student center. Our hotel had an indoor pool, so we ended the night swimming. On Saturday, the tailgating party started at 9:30 with the ballgame beginning at 12:00. The weather was very humid with rain coming in with about 4 minutes left in the ballgame. We got soaked, but it was alot of fun. We ate dinner together, then went to dry out! On Sunday, we went to church together, ate a great lunch, then headed back home. It was such a wonderful time! I appreciate all the planning and hard work that different people put into making it all happen.

On our way to the college on Friday, we stopped at Red Top Mountain State Park for a picnic. As you may know, our area has recently had much flooding. Well, here is where some of the picnic tables still were on Friday! Even though the park still had alot of tables in water, we were able to have our picnic in this beautiful park.

The next few pictures are of game day. I thought this blow up of "Buzz" was interesting!

I just love hearing the band. They did the best formations! This one is of Tech Tower with the bottom part spelling out "Tech". How neat!

This is the Atlanta skyline just as the rain was moving in around us, then eventually soaking us ( even though we had raincoats and rain ponchos!).

Week in Review and Upcoming Activities

Last Friday there was a hot air balloon festival held on the field behind our house. There were hot air balloons, bands, crafts, a children's area, and much more. The band stage was set up in the cul-de-sac right at the back of our house. On Friday afternoon the band was practicing and they sounded very good, but it was also very loud. I think the animals that hang out in the brush behind our house made their way to our backyard. This little one was hovering by our pool. I was on our deck and he just stayed there nibbling on grass. I think he felt safe there. Our dog was also not feeling so good with the noise. He kept trying to get out of our backyard. He would go to the gate and try to get out and then end up getting stuck. I stayed on the deck awhile to try and calm him. Eventually he decided everything was okay. It was really a nice event,especially being right behind the house. They had a great turn out on Friday night, but Saturday was rained out. They still had the craft booths up since they were under tents. Hopefully they will attempt this again in the future. The next few pictures were taken from my deck, so you can see how close everything was to our house.

I got tickled at the purple monster. I was doing dishes and looked out the window to see this wonderful face looking back at me. How funny!

This was such a wild week, with all the flooding that our area sustained. Everyone is trying to get things cleaned up. We worked at our church last night, cleaning and tearing carpet up. There is much to be done.

This weekend we are headed to my son's college. They are having family weekend. I am very excited about the whole weekend. There are alot of activities to choose from. We were supposed to go to Six Flags on Friday night, but they are closed due to the flooding. Alot of the rides were damaged, so now they have to be repaired and every ride has to undergo safety inspections. However, there is still alot of other activities available. I am hoping to get to sit in on the lecture given by an author of a book that I am reading. But, most of all, I am looking forward to spending some time with my son. We get to see him on Sundays, as we drive there to go to church with him. But this weekend we should get to spend more time together.

Outdoor Wednesday

It's Outdoor Wednesday time again! Thanks to Susan over at, www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting this wonderful event. This week I want to share pictures of our massive flooding that we have been experiencing here in North Georgia. The Atlanta and surrounding areas have been hit hard. We had some really hard rain over several days. About this time last year we were still in a drought. Amazing how things change! The picture below is one of a golf driving range. As you can see, the back part of the range is under water.

I took this picture from the interstate. This is Camping World near Chattanooga, Tennessee. All of the pull behind campers were in water.

As for our family personally, our downstairs flooded. We spent most of Monday with the wet vac and buckets trying to get the water out. We have it out of the inside rooms, and almost out of the garage. Now, on to the clean up. Also, our church suffered some flooding. The classroom areas are in a lower area, so they are ruined. There was 8 inches that got into that area. Tonight we are going over to help with clean up. I thank the Lord for safety during this time. I know from news reports that not everyone was safe. There were some drownings due to the flooding. My prayers are with the family members of those individuals. I thank the Lord that we are no longer in a drought situation. Sometimes, as now, I don't understand why circumstances play out as they do, but I do always know that God is in control and He does know the whole plan. Praise be to God!

What a Great Day!

We went on a field trip today to the IMAX theater in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We were able to see the movie "Under The Sea". After the movie we got to meet the makers of the film. They gave a talk and answered some questions. I thought their talk was fascinating. They told about everything that goes into making underwater films. They have made IMAX films, National Geographic films, PBS, and Discovery channel films. Just getting all the equipment to the site of filming is a daunting task. The film they use for the IMAX runs for 3 minutes. So, they have to reload after that time. Oh, and getting those wonderful shots takes patience, lots of patience. I now have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into the making of those movies. The above picture is of two of my boys inside the Tennessee Aquarium. One of my boys is holding a souvenir poster from the movie. The picture below is outside the aquarium.

We had a great lunch at Cheeburger, Cheeburger.

It was a very enjoyable day. Now, we get to be entertained by bands right behind our house! Our county is hosting a Balloons & Tunes Festival this weekend. There will be hot air balloons, crafts, food of all sorts, a children's area, and lots of music. On Sunday, they are having a church service with festivities to follow. I hope to have lots of pictures! I will get to sit on my deck and enjoy life!!

Outdoor Wednesday

It's Outdoor Wednesday time! Thanks to our host, Susan, over at www.asoutherndaydreamer . Our family went to visit the New Echota Cherokee Capital. This site is one of Georgia's state historic sites. In 1819 the Cherokee council began holding their annual council meetings at New Town. The Council, on November 12, 1825, adopted a resolution renaming New Town, New Echota and making it the Cherokee Nation's Capital. Annual council meetings were held in October,during which time several hundred Cherokees came into town.

New Echota had approximately 50 residents. There was also a Supreme Court Building, Cherokee Phoenix Print Shop, The Cherokee Council House and several private homes, stores, a ferry, and a nearby mission station.

Today's pictures are part one of our visit. Some are outdoor pictures, while some are pictures of the inside of the buildings. This was a fascinating place to visit. It is larger than what it seems from the road, and it holds a wonderful historic story.

This is a picture of the inside of the print shop. I was amazed to learn that The Cherokee Capital had its own newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix. The newspaper was not only circulated throughout the Cherokee Nation, but also parts of the United States and Europe. The printing shop also printed pages of other publications, such as hymns, the Bible, and a novel.

Most Cherokees, according to the 1835 Cherokee census, lived in small cabins on farms. These farms also included common outbuildings such as corncribs, smokehouses, potato houses, and barns.

Vegetable gardens surrounded the farmstead buildings. There were also fruit trees and cornfields.

The next two pictures are of a middle-class Cherokee farmstead. The building was constructed in the early-mid 1800's. They were moved to this location to represent how the New Echota residents lived.

It has been a while since my last post. I have been dealing with some kind of nasty virus. This weekend I have started to feel better. This one really was a tough one! So, hopefully, I will be blogging happily again:)

I am reading "Teaching the Trivium" by Harvey & Laurie Bluedorn and just thoroughly enjoying it. I am highlighting and making notes. In chapter one the statement is made, "The potential for a true change of our culture lies with those people who renew and transform the family, because the family is God's instrument of choice for transforming a culture. Only through the transformation of the family can a society be restructured to agree with Christian order and the rule of God's law." I started thinking about that statement and so much agree with it. The family is so important in making an impact in our world. Every role within the family is important. What concerns me, is that our world is striving so hard to confuse or totally wipe out the roles that each family member has. Our world promotes a "do your own thing" with no regard to your responsibility to others. When families have that order that God ordains, you find peace, even within busy days and schedules, peace that makes an impact!

I think that we have got to strengthen our families and the only way I know to do that is through God. The study and reading of God's word within the home, praying together as a family, and letting each family member know that their role within the family is important. It is sad to me that there are so many shows that belittle the family or what is usually the case, the show makes the parents look stupid and clueless, while the children are much more savvy and smart. Or, the shows that show rebellion from the children as normal. Being a parent takes courage, time, patience, and most importantly an active prayer life. We have got to take our families back.

One of the ways, I believe, to promote family is to promote traditions within the family. One of our traditions is family movie night. This is normally on Friday nights. We make homemade pizza, have a special dessert, and gather for a family movie. We look forward to these nights. We gather with our quilts and have a great time. In the winter, we will have hot chocolate with marshmallows. Even though my boys are teenagers, this is a night that they look forward to. Sometimes, it can get easy to think these nights don't mean much and to let things slip in the planning for these nights ( I have done that!), but my boys will gently let me know that our movie nights are slipping and we need to plan better. This lets me know that they care about this tradition.

One episode of "Extreme Home Makeover" on ABC, showed a single dad with five sons ranging in age from pre-teen to older teens living in a high crime area. I mean drug deals would take place right down the street from their house. This dad made a huge statement. He said that he knew he needed to do something to keep his boys wanting to be home with him on the weekends when alot of bad things were going on down the street. He started having movie nights with his boys, spending the time with them, when he was really tired from just making ends meet. But, this act, this tradition, was huge within his family. His boys chose to gather with him instead of hanging out where they shouldn't be. The show made the family a special movie room in their new house. I thought it was an awesome statement by this single dad of five boys.

I just want to close these ramblings of mine with some scripture dealing with families.

Outdoor Wednesday

It is Outdoor Wednesday time again! Thanks to Susan at www.asoutherndaydreamer for hosting this exciting event. Please visit all the Outdoor Wednesday posts for wonderful pictures. I wanted to share the rest of our battlefield pictures. We enjoy this park very much with its trails, monuments, and history. There are cyclists, walkers, runners, and tourist in the park all the time. If you missed my earlier post of this park, this is the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. It is not too far from where we live.

We enjoy reading the monuments and trying to imagine this area without everything that is there today. The visitor's center offers some wonderful programs about a soldier's life and they also offer driving tours of the park.

This is the gate to the tower. I think it is just beautiful. The climb to the top of the tower is tough, but once you are at the top, wow, what a view!!

This is the Visitor's Center. They have a bookstore, a theater that shows a short film, a military gun collection, and several historical items to view. The rangers are also a great wealth of information. They are very passionate about their work and it comes through in their willingness to share stories about the park.

Homeschool Open House

It's The Homeschool Lounge Homeschool Open House 2009! I thought I would post about our curriculum for 2009-2010 and about our schedule. I hope to post pictures next week of our schoolroom. I am in the process of painting and organizing. First, a little about my "students". My oldest is in his first year of college and we are very excited for him. My middle son is in the 10th grade and my youngest is in the 9th grade. We are all very excited about our school year. The first two pictures ( sorry they are sideways!!) are of our family read alouds that we are doing in the evening. We are using Sonlight's American History in depth this year. Instead of them reading Peace Child on their own, we decided to do it as a family read aloud. We are going deep with missionary studies this year. We are enjoying this book immensely. We also are just starting Outcasts United by Warren St. John. I have been reading ahead and I have to say that I am really intrigued by this book. It is a true account of a refugee soccer team and their coach. The location where the story takes place is not too far from where I live. I am excited that we will get a chance to meet the author in late September.

This year we are using Skills for Rhetoric by James P. Stobaugh. This book can be used for Jr. High through Senior High. We are hoping to participate in a speech and debate club. We are also using some supplemental books with our rhetoric study.

The boys are doing Algebra 2 with Saxxon Teacher this year. They like Saxxon, and are especially enjoying Saxxon Teacher. We will also do some supplemental acitivities through different math websites to reinforce the concepts.

We are doing an American composer study once a week using, A History of American Classical Music, by Barrymore Laurence Sherer.

We are also going to study American poets using The Mentor Book of Major American Poets edited by Oscar Williams and Edwin Honig.

Our language arts will include many different sources. We will be using Spelling Wisdom, The Winston Grammar Program Advanced, Latina Christiana Book I, and Wordly Wise.

We are also using IEW for writing, SAT study cards for PSAT and SAT prep, an American artist study along with a study of two of Shakespeare's plays. Also, this year we will be participating in the Outdoor Hour Challenge. Our focus will be on trees and weather. Our Bible study consists of a worldview study including using various Answers in Genesis material and videos. Also, our family Bible study will be studying the Gospels and digging deep into the life of Christ.

We hope to be involved in more mission minded work and community service work.

I am excited about our physical education program. We will be working through the fit programs that the State Park system of Georgia offers. They have a Canyon Climbers Club, Paddle Club, and Cycle Club. You can learn more about these on the Georgia State Parks website.

My 10th grader studies Anatomy & Physiology and composition through a local homeschool support. My 9th grader studies Biology and Spanish I at the same place. My 10th grader is continuing French II with Rosetta Stone version 3.

Both boys will be involved in driver education training.

My 10th grader will also be involved in Civil Air Patrol and Civil War battle reenactments. My 9th grader will be involved in learning to make videos, website design, and strategic war games.

We will be studying United States geography, along with adding to our Georgia studies. We add to our Georgia studies each year. We visit different sites in the state, learn about famous figures of Georgia, authors, painters, etc....

Our schedule does not go by time slots as much as what subjects we cover each day. Our schedule also includes field trip days, as we love hands on! Below is what we try to cover each day:

We will try to make our field trips on Friday or Saturday. We will document these with pictures, journal, information pamphlets, and reading anything that pertains to that particular place.

We are off to a great start. We are excited about the opportunities available to us and hope to make good use of those things. It is always a tightrope walk, it seems ,to balance our time with what to be involved in and what to pass on. I am praying that God will give my husband and myself wisdom in this area, as there are always many exciting events to be involved in. I value our time at home, together as a family, so I don't want to overload us with outside activities. Sitting at home, reading a book together is absolutely an awesome thing to do!

We had a wet weekend, which is good. We can always use the rain! I was able to pull out some of my autumn decorations. I still need to do some yard work and get things looking more like autumn outside. I also still have to finish the painting downstairs. Show and Tell Friday

This week I would like to share some of my thrift store finds. I have a favorite thrift store that I occasionally get to visit. This last week I was able to find these treasures! The first two pictures are of a panel of curtains. They are Tommy Hilfilger floor to ceiling panels. I was able to get 4 panels for $13.00! I am going to put them in our craft/school room.

My oldest just started college and I am trying to get some clothes in the school's colors. We go to family weekend next month and what I found was that I had nothing in their colors. So, I found this shirt for $3.00. I think it will work nice at family weekend!

We are always in need of towels, washcloths and the such ( who isn't? ). I picked up these three washcloths up for $1.50. They are very thick and looked brand new!

I just loved this. I think I will use it to put seasonal candies in. It was .50 cents.

I picked up this vase for .50 cents also!

I love Christmas and Christmas decorations. This thrift store always has wonderful Christmas decorations. I picked up these dessert plates for .50 cents each. I was able to get three ( that was all they had ). I have three boys, so I thought that worked out fine.

Another Christmas decoration. I have a real weakness for decorations! This cute little Santa was .35 cents, so I knew he had to come home with me!

Outdoor Wednesday

Happy Outdoor Wednesday! Thanks to Susan, at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. I enjoy looking at all the Outdoor Wednesday posts. Today, I wanted to share a mix of outdoor pictures. These are from various outings that our family has taken. I hope you enjoy them! This first picture is at "Sloppy Floyd" state park. It is located in Summerville, Georgia. It is a beautiful park where you can fish, canoe, hike, picnic, play on the playground, and just enjoy nature.

Last week I posted some pictures of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park. This is the tower in the park, which you can go inside and climb to the top. At the top, you can see the most amazing view. I can see why this was a lookout tower. It is also great for exercise!

Moving to the ocean now! This is in Jekyll Island, Georgia. The boys enjoying a day in the ocean.

Now we are on to Disney World. This is the boat that took us to the Magic Kingdom from the campgrounds. Our family loves Fort Wilderness. We have camped there several times ( tent camping ) and loved it. There is so much to do in the campground. They show a movie every night with hot chocolate and marshmallow roasts. There is a great buffet to eat at. We usually tried to eat lunch there at least once during our stay.

This is the church that sits across from the Grand Floridian. Alot of marriages take place there. We camped at Fort Wilderness one December and one day we took the monorail and went to see the gingerbread houses at the other hotels. The Grand Floridian had a life size gingerbread house. It was wonderful.

We had a wonderful weekend and an even better Lord's Day yesterday! Saturday, the boys had friends over and my husband worked at his mother's in the morning, so I tried to get a few things accomplished. I did get some ironing and some cleaning done. I am thinking about planting a fall garden. I need to get on that, if that's the plan. I have not planted a fall garden before, so this will be an adventure! This weekend I plan to put up my summer decorations and get out the "applish" decorations. We have had a couple of cool nights, which was refreshing.

It seems that since we started school, things have been going at lightning speed! I have fell behind in a weekly menu, even though this is when I need that direction the most! Anyway, I think I am back on track, so the menu for this week is as follows:

Outdoor Wednesday

It is time again for Outdoor Wednesday. Thanks to Susan, over at www.asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this weekly event. Today I want to share a few pictures and a little history of a nearby park. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, which was the nation's first, was created in 1890. The park is 5,500 acres and was the scene of the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War. The Union and Confederate forces were fighting for control of Chattanooga, which was the gateway to the south.
In November of 1863 Union troops gained final control.

The park was created to preserve these battlefields. There are numerous monuments, historical tablets, exhibits, and trails. There is an auto tour that you can take and there is also the visitors center which houses exhibits, a bookstore, and a collection of military arms.

This park draws several visitors each year, along with several runners, cyclists, and walkers. As you go through the park, you will probably see several deer out in the fields.

Our family enjoys going to the park to hike the trails, bike, or just walk and take in the exhibits. Last year, we enjoyed going to a battle reenactment in the park.

If you love Civil War history, this is definitely a park you will want to visit.

Menu Monday

What a wonderful weekend it was! Georgia Tech held their Freshman Convocation yesterday, so we picked my son up for church, then went out to eat. We had a wonderful visit. After we dropped him off at his dorm, we went to a parent's reception, then on to the convocation. It was a lovely ceremony, encouraging the freshman class on their new college careers.

The band was just awesome! We enjoyed hearing them play several songs.

We were also entertained by the Glee Club. How talented these men are! By the way, that is "Buzz" leading them!

A picture of some of the freshman wearing their R.A.T.S caps ( Recently Acquired Tech Student). I so much enjoyed this ceremony. It was very moving, uplifting, and encouraging.

On Saturday we met some friends to go to the local arcade. We had so much fun! We rode the go-carts with the boys, then went inside and visited while the boys played video games.

It was a very nice evening with friends! We enjoyed the time to get caught up with them.

I will post my weekly menu tomorrow. I have not written it out yet. We are in full force on school this week. I wish everyone a wonderful Monday!

College Move 2009

The big day happened yesterday. We moved our oldest into his college dorm. This has been a deeply emotional journey. I find I am spending alot of time on my knees in prayer. I have also found that I have truly experienced that "peace that surpasses all understanding" that God promises us. I have cried in prayer, I have poured out my heart in prayer, and God has been faithful to hear and answer each time. When we came to move in day, I was sad, but I also had a joy for this time in my son's life. I also knew that he is in God's hands. I don't know what path God has for him, but I do know that God will be there every step of the way, and that is very reassuring! We were so thankful for the beautiful day yesterday! We packed everything up and headed to Atlanta!

We had twenty minutes to unload our stuff, then we had to move our truck so others could unload. We took everything in suitcases, piled it on his bed, and moved the truck. He has alot of organizing to do!

This is the street in front of his building. It was crazy yesterday, but in a sort of organized way. I was impressed at how "smooth" it went, considering the amount of people trying to get moved in.

His room is close to the stadium. He is actually in a very good location. We sent his room deposit in very early, so we were able to get his first choice location.

We ate lunch at Moe's. This was our first time to eat there. It was very good. They were covered over with people, but everything moved very well.

These two were super movers. They helped with moving and getting everything unloaded in a timely manner.

The day went really well. I did not know what to expect, so anxieties were high. Once again, I realized who is in control here, not me, but God. I also think my son felt relieved that the day was here and we could now move forward with things. I got a facebook message last night letting me know that all was well! I am going to love those facebook messages!

Thanks to everyone who has sent such sweet comments through this blog and facebook. Your thoughts and prayers mean so much.

I wish everyone a wonderful Friday! My other two sons and I are going to enjoy a field trip together today!

Outdoor Wednesday

It is Outdoor Wednesday time! Thanks to Susan, over at www.southerndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this. Be sure to check out all the posts! I thought that I would keep my theme from yesterday and post a few more highlights from our summer. This first picture is from Panama City Beach. There was a storm coming in which was absolutely beautiful to watch.

Another wonderful memory of Summer 2009 was family reunions. The boys enjoyed themselves swimming. I enjoyed visiting with relatives that I hadn't seen for awhile.

My flowers at my mailbox. I just love getting the mail and seeing the display that they make. I will be working on fixing that area up for autumn. I love seeing the flowers everyone has around their mailboxes!

Our visits to state parks was definitely a highlight of the summer. This is the bridge to Red Top Mountain State Park near Atlanta, Georgia. This is such a beautiful park, although, I think all the Georgia state parks are stunning! Spending time at the state parks is wonderful and very low-cost. A great family activity. We want to visit the parks during the changing of the seasons to note the differences taking place. God has given us so much to enjoy in these parks!
